HIKING TRAILS

The Spruce Knob/Seneca Rocks area has many fine hiking trails, but we think the NRP trail system is one of the best day hikes around. The Corridor Trail is steep and rugged, climbing from Nelson Gap through the canyon-like corridor between the "fins" of the Rocks, which rise up to 300 feet above the trail. Pierson's Trail is easier, but still a workout, winding its way up wooded slopes to join the Corridor Trail high on the mountain. Both trails provide access for adventurous hikers to the summit area with its 360 degree views of the North Fork and Germany Valleys.

Day Passes for hiking are $5 per person and may be purchased on a self service basis, 365 days a year at the NRP entrance station. OPEN DURING DAYLIGHT HOURS.

CIRCUIT HIKE

We recommend going up the Corridor Trail and down Pierson's, rather than vice-versa. The hundreds (thousands?) of steps in the corridor seem harder going down.

A trail hike is a great alternative for visitors who are not sure they're ready for challenges of the via ferrata. A good option for some groups is to split up, with the more adventurous taking the via while the rest enjoy the hike up the corridor trail. The hikers can observe portions of the via climb and meet the climbers high in the corridor, where the group can proceed together to the summit area and descend via Pierson's Trail.

The trails have received major maintenance and repairs in 2005-2006, so come on out and enjoy!

HIKERS SHOULD BE AWARE OF THE HAZARDS IN THIS AREA. READ OUR WARNING. In particular, be aware that if there are climbers above you, they may send rocks your way. Make them aware of your presence if possible, don't linger, and if they yell "ROCK!", take cover fast.

What will you need? Wear loose fitting clothing and good shoes (tennis shoes, hiking boots etc.; sandals are not recommended). Bear in mind that it's cooler and windier up on the mountain, so bring some extra clothing. A rain jacket is generally a good idea. Water and some food. A small pack should be carried by at least one member of the party to carry items not in use.
